Clandestine Laboratories – Methamphetamine Testing

According to the Australian Crime Commission’s Illicit Drug Data Report, more than 740 clandestine methamphetamine drug laboratories were detected during 2013-14 and increase of more than 95% over the past decade. Regulatory authorities have recognised that the residues and contamination from these operations can lead to adverse health and environmental effects for the community and families that may unknowingly be living in or near a former meth lab. As such the Clandestine Drug Laboratory Remediation Guidelines was developed and the “four phased approach” was adopted at a national level to help mitigate the health hazards former meth labs pose:

1. Trigger for assessment;
2. Preliminary assessment and action;
3. Site assessment and remediation; and
4. Validation.
